EEI and IE efficiency classes: what they mean and how much you save
When choosing a pump you meet two energy labels: EEI and IE. Understanding them helps you save energy and stay compliant.
EEI — Energy Efficiency Index (circulators)
EEI measures the efficiency of wet-rotor circulators. Lower is better. The ErP directive requires EEI ≤ 0.23 for standalone circulators; the best electronic models reach EEI ≤ 0.20 — up to 80% less energy than an old 3-speed circulator.
IE — International Efficiency (motors)
IE classes (IE2, IE3, IE4, IE5) rate the efficiency of the electric motors on larger pumps. Since 2021 many motors must be at least IE3; IE5 is today's top. An IE5 motor can cut losses by 20–40% versus IE2.
Why it really matters
A pump often runs 24/7: a few efficiency points, multiplied by thousands of hours, are worth hundreds of euros a year. Efficiency is an investment, not a cost.
